The Importance of Packaging (or How to Get Your Customers to Buy)

Posted by: Megan on: 14 Jul, 2009

I found this article at SpecialtyFood.com that gives a lot of useful information about what consumers are looking for when it comes to packaging.

The most important trends include using sustainable, functional and reusable packaging, as well as clean labeling. But just because your packaging is made from 100% post-consumer waste and you didn’t harm any dolphins in the process, that doesn’t mean your food product is going to fly off the shelves. You still need great design!

Whether it’s a uniquely-shaped bottle, a simple, bold label or a “window” so the consumer can see your product, innovative package design can set your product apart from the rest. Plus, retailers are often fond of interesting packaging because they know it’s more attractive to shoppers. Your package is usually your first and most critical impression on consumers, so it’s imperative to present your product the best way you can.

There are a few tips at the end of the article, of which my favorite is this: Hire a professional designer.

A professional designer will ask lots of questions and listen carefully in order to understand your company’s background, goals and positioning.  He or she will also research to see what the competition is doing. Perhaps the most important thing a professional designer understands is that while your packaging needs to meet with your standards, its most significant function is to appeal to your target consumer. And if the designer already knows about the industry and the target consumer you want to reach, the better off you’ll be!
