Small Business owners are largely forgotten. Thats why I only focus on them. I have experience several members of my family file bankruptcy due to small business failures. I also I suffered through 2 destroyed businesses due to failure however, in my failings I have learned some of the secrets to success.

Ryan,

Thanks for sharing this information. There really is not a lot written for food entrepreneurs and I will certainly share this link with my students. Everyone wants to think they will make "millions" selling their products online and it's just not that simple and often does not materialize that way. Would love to see more info like this.

Regards,
Denay

Also, the consumers that shop small retail stores are very different than the big box purchasers and interact with others in a different manner.

These gourmet shoppers are more likely to influence others with their tastes and shopping preferences. We can examine the data but in general they are more social, share their food product selections quickly, and like to 'turn on' friends and family to their 'food finds.'

The small shop consumer can provide larger returns than simply being the purchaser of one item. They can be your cheerleader to success.

We've built our business from this "long tail" group as they are more nimble and have higher quality, more unique products. They do run into road blocks trying to establish relationships with larger chains who have no interest in unproven lines. There is always a market for this product and the small independent gourmet store owner uses the internet to locate products for their business. Traveling to trade shows has gotten out of reach and why would they want to stock the same products as all of the big stores? We tell our vendors to ship free samples and charge for shipping so the buyers can taste and decide. We had gross sales of nearly $200k last year, our first full year online most of which were first orders.

Nice work.

I continue to be puzzled by the assumption that retailers will purchase product online for the first time.

We need data that support the contention that they do.

Reorders, okay, but first orders??

Great article. While the younger market gets you some buzz and is seen as more trendy, the graying market is extremely loyal to a good product/service, provides invaluable word-of-mouth marketing and has buying power. Keep up the good work.
